Structural pruning may require the implementation of several different pruning techniques to help strengthen the core integrity of a tree.
It may be administered when a tree is young to help create a sound foundation or when an older tree has developed co-dominate branches, closely paralleled branches, too many branches, and, other weaknesses in it’s form.
The combinations of pruning techniques commonly applied are:
- Thinning of the Tree’s Canopy
- Reduction of the Crown
- Restoration of the Crown (if the tree has suffered from previous topping or severe storm damage)
Note: Read pruning older trees before making any large cuts on fully mature trees.
